Sometime Life Gets in the Way of Life

All of my performances will be cancelled till mid July 2017. This is a pic of me getting discharged, in good spirits and of course clad in tie dies! The Xray is a before and after shot. There inserted a pin in my femur secured with some screws. So now I will trigger scanning devices for life. The other Xray is blurry, and the trained eye quickly spots four breaks. The last pic is unrelated and shows my Achilles heel – its the tropical sunburn that results from failing to put sun screen on my ankles. Undergoing daily physio, and looking...

Cooler weather makes musical Medicine a welcome tonic

Summer is officially over and, as if watching the calendar, Mother Nature has begun offering a taste of the cooler weather to come.  While many will cope with the change in part by getting flu shots over the coming couple of months (I’m glad I did last year, I can say unreservedly) other tonics are available that help bolster your mood as the temperatures fall —and few would dispute the beneficial health effects of that. Even before he became newly health-conscious well over a year ago now, Roots songwriter, guitar ace andWinterfolk Festival...

15 stellar artists recording Tony Quarrington songs tonight

Reprinted from Toronto Moon – I’ve written a few times now about the remarkably diverse talents of Tony Quarrington, a composer, arranger/producer, guitar virtuoso, singer-songwriter and ubiquitous musical sidekick to highly regarded artists like Noah Zacharin, Brian Gladstone and Soozi Schlanger among many others. The Juno-winning “renaissance artist” —as I described him in an article about his unique six-song operatic Jazz composition “Emily’s Songs” in October 2014— is about to see his public profile get another much deserved boost...

First fundraiser to complete Gaidies album tonight at Free Times |

From Toronto Moon  As I mentioned in the introduction to the heartfelt obituary that Brian Jantzi wrote about Folk songwriter Christine Gaidies after her untimely passing last month, I never knew her, even though we were friends on social media for a little while. Those who were close to her describe Christine as an optimistic, sunny personality and perhaps that can in part be seen in how she never bemoaned her medical situation and if anything underplayed it in her social media posts even as the cancer was robbing her of vitality and...

Back In the Studio

Back in the studio tomorrow with Margaret Stowe and Tony Quarrington hopefully lay down 5 guitar tracks for some of my new songs. I tend to write above my ability to play, so they take me forever to learn and I practice insessently. Sometimes I will work on a tune for over a year to get it clean and up to speed. As primarily a ‘finger-style’ guitar player I do things in reverse order from most artists. I like to do the guitar first, and use that as the bed tracks. Then all the other tracks to follow have to work around...

Some events rely upon the personality or skills of the host, others depend on the appeal of the venue, still others attract adherents because of the particular genre or style of music that’s encouraged and yet others are basically local affairs, mostly drawing people from a particular neighbourhood. A Most Unusual Day Indeed

It was a most unusual day at Dr. B’s Acoustic Medicine Show last Saturday. Just after we got rolling, during my opening set, the sound system at the Free Times Cafe started to growl and then died. Spirit of Yorkville Festival May 22 – 23, 2015

I’m really excited to be performing at the first annual Spirit of Yorkville First Annual Festival Early Bird Tickets until April 30 in Toronto on May 22 / 23. Its a great chance to see many of the artists who played the clubs of Yorkville during the late 60’s, and relive much of my misguided youth. That’s the time when I was starting to play the guitar, and learned much by watching Mike McKenna every week playing with Luke and the Apostles at Boris’. Strangely, now I’m playing on the same night as them! Get your...

Dr. B’s Saturday Afternoons Acoustic Stage – A Good Winter Antidote

From Torontomoon.ca As what has been deemed “the coldest February ever” by meteorologists finally, blessedly comes to an end, a lot of live music venues are hurting large because of reduced income that one has to think is at least partly because of the recent inclement conditions. But not every event has been so cruelly affected. As the Winterfolk Festival XIII a couple of weeks ago demonstrated during one of the most bitterly cold weekends I’ve ever experienced in TO, there are still some shows that people will go to no matter what the...

Gladstone’s Festival Draws Crowds in Winter Cold

Submitted by Lee Fraser – This is a tale of bitter cold and welcoming warmth. Somehow, here in Toronto, the right light bulb went on over the right head.  Winterfolk is the creation of Brian Gladstone. Having spent most of his life in the corporate world, it seems that Brian chose to explore his creative side when others were embarking on mid-life crises.  With almost five decades behind him, he decided to record an album.  Through hard work and self-promotion, he got radio play and record label distribution in Europe.  But when he...

Brian Gladstone back in action as weekly open stage host starting today

Open mics come and go and few seem to be able to put in place all the right elements to last for more than a year or so, with the vast majority fizzling long before that. But there’s good reason to think that with today’s debut of a new Saturday afternoon 2-5ish open mic being hosted by we may be seeing the laying of a foundation for many years of playing and social interacting at this weekly event. This one seems to have all the right ingredients in place (save one) so I’d be expecting today to be somewhat historic. For starters, Dr. B’s...

His a1bility to communicate the wacky and smirking side of living in his lyrics is quite honest and conscious and supplemented by a youthful Bob Dylan-esque voice that sounds a little repressed and mushed from living life as it ought be lived. Charming. ExclaimExclaim I like the album because the singer never really took himself seriously, and just tells intelligent jokes around from the beginning all the way to the end with an instrumental breaks in the middle of the album, which are surprisingly good. I also love the cartoon-like sound of...

Children Sleep in Snow

‘Children Sleep in Snow’ is written and recorded by Brian Gladstone, on my first album called ‘Back to the Dirt, released in 1999. I wrote it after I saw some young teenagers sleeping in the bank machine room in down-town Toronto, on a cold winter’s night. If anyone complains about the winter this year, just watch this and you may not feel so bad. My daughter Lindsey sang the vocal harmony with me. She was 14 years old at the time, and she reminded me about the street children that inspired this...

Where Have All the Protest Songs Gone – Toronto Star Story

Where Have All the Protest Songs Gone June 28, 2010 – Includes Interview with Brian Gladstone  – Sometime in the late 1960s, Pete Seeger — in his prime with just a banjo and a 12-string guitar — stepped up to a single microphone on the concert stage of the Sydney Town Hall in Australia, and started singing. One after another, the simple yet profoundly affecting songs that moved a generation — a couple of generations, actually — poured forth like some kind of healing sacrament. “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” “Turn, Turn, Turn.”...

Brian Gladstone: A Time for New Beginnings – CD Review

Rating: 4.5/5 – Reprinted From Hot Indie News Gladstone is a guy who works in an office with only three walls, hates those who take two-day lunch breaks, and likes to declare his love in a park among potato salads and army ants. This album is one of the funnier ones I’ve heard, and the singer delivered it with his somewhat off-key voice that never lacked the deadpan tone needed to supply his deadpan humor. Although he sometimes used clichéd words, I’m willing to overlook that for the overall strength of the album. The album has a...

Now Magazine Disc Reviews – BRIAN GLADSTONE – Psychedelic Pholk Psongs

Disc Reviews Now Magazine – BRIAN GLADSTONE – Psychedelic Pholk Psongs There's no pretense about Psychedelic Pholk Songs. It is what it is — an aging hippie playing songs influenced by his life and times in tie-dye. Though upfront, honest and rich in ingenuity, it gives off a spark when it could so easily have burst into flames. Brian Gladstone's fingerpicking makes his guitar ring out beautifully, and his comical lyrics bring smiles to one's lips — especially in his faux homage to Mel Lastman in Mega...

Alive and Picking, recorded live at Convocation Hall last February as part of Toronto's annual Winterfolk festival, is merely the latest installment in the unstoppable Gladstone snowball. The Gladstone master plan has been to expose his distinctive brand of quirky but compelling Folk music to as many people as...

Brian Gladstone “Alive And Picking” – Recorded Live at Convocation Hall In Toronto (Self-Released 2003) Recorded live in February of 2003, Brian Gladstone’s “Alive And Picking” is eight spirited and likable finger picking guitar tunes. BRIAN GLADSTONE – PSYCHEDELIC PHOLK PSONGS – SILVERWOLF RECORDS – Canada’s Brian Gladstone is doing some amazing finger picking on this funny, inventive album—maybe the best folk album that I ever heard. I grew up on folk music, and Brian Gladstone is in that room with the big boys like Woody himself. Brian Gladstone’s music comes across in rich, resonating tones found on pre-disco records of so-called classic rock. On track 2, “Save the Wolverine”, the mood is haunting in a WORKING MAN’S...

Pholkie and Phingerpicker Extraordinaire from Canada

Reprinted from Folkwax Magazine – March 2004 – Toronto singer/guitarist Brian Gladstone is a fingerpicking guitar master, a colourful storyteller and an intuitive performer. His debut CD, Back To The Dirt, is an all-acoustic offering on which he plays all the instruments. Wolf Hassel, formerly of multi-platinum Canadian Pop act Frozen Ghost, who wrote the album's liner notes, calls Brian's songs "new, unique and quite out of the ordinary…a tapestry of feelings, emotions and collective memories."...

Rambles Reviews Alive & Picking

Alive & Picking opens at a run, with Brian Gladstone and Tony Quarrington detailing the desperado life of an "Asphalt Cowboy." Fast picking and playful cameos by a cheerful female vocalist detail the exploits of a would-be wild man trying to break into the country music business. It's funny, earnest, very well played and an excellent introduction to this sadly brief concert album. Gladstone's vocal range is far younger than his words, and always carries a certain wry amusement. He does...

Quotable Quotes  Brian has done it again – he’s given the world a CD chocked full of songs that make music fun and entertaining again. Indiecator Brian Gladstone for me over his career has some elements which I consider a bit of wrong, but not in a (too) negative sense. First of all he has all qualities of being a hippie (like believing in peace and in peace songs : he even published a compilation under this subject, a collection from various wishing-(all)-well characters), but at the same time he most often doesn’t sound like a...

Culture Raven writes about ‘Alive & Pickin’

Pleasant enough finger-picked acoustic guitar. Odd home brewed CD. Liner notes go on and on about the magnetic devices he designs for his brother’s company. Sample title: “I like me.” Does that mean I have to? I do remember this song however, so the CD passes the distraction test. Lunch passes by pleasantly. I chuckle at a song about our ex-mayor Mel Lastman . But not one of these songs takes me away to that “land inside of my mind” that Ted Nugent and his Amboy Dukes sung about, so this CD should not have the word “psychedelic in the title.”...

Cover Story, Folk Wax Magazine, Sept 2002 By L.H. McLachlan – Just three years ago, Brian Gladstone was an unknown folk artist who had just recorded his first album, Back to the Dirt. Like many indie artists, he had been working in a vacuum, recording his original songs in his home studio. At the time, he didn’t know any other musicians and had no media contacts. Reprinted from Music Morsels, Feb 2002 – This acoustic CD by Toronto singer/songwriter Brian Gladstone shows talents in several directions of folk, country and lyrical prowess. "Asphalt Cowboy" kicks things off with a bluegrass feel and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, while "Save The Wolverine" is more of a passionate plea with a traditional folk edge. Exclaim on Gladstone

.By Roman Sokal –  December 11, 2001    Although touted as a psychedelic artist, it appears that Toronto-area artist Brian Gladstone is more of a straightforward country folkster than a tripster. His stream flowing, 1980s, Roky Erickson-esque string plucking is a treat, coupled with a 1964-esque vibe transmitting from a Nashville hotel room. His ability to communicate the wacky and smirking side of living in his lyrics is quite honest and conscious and supplemented by a youthful Bob Dylan-esque voice that sounds...

Grab a handful of Brian Gladstone’s Back To The Dirt

By Gary Tate, Cover Story To-Nite Magazine, April 2000 Brian Gladstone’s CD Back To The Dirt is a barrel of contradictions: light, breezy, and fun-loving one moment, then dark, brooding, and acerbic the next. Even the author acknowledges this by prefacing his liner notes with a definition of the word "paradox." He sees himself as a paradoxical soul, in his own words "a package … of apparently oppositional forces that allows for the creation of something new, unique, and quite out of the ordinary." Or, as he is...
